Kamryn Kuo's Gold Award Project Scores Crowther Youth Recognition
Glendora High senior honored after organizing a free basketball clinic for elementary school girls at the Crowther Teen Center.
The Glendora Community Coordinating Council (GCCC) presented its October Crowther Youth Award to Kamryn Kuo, a senior at Glendora High School, in recognition of her dedication to service and leadership within the community.
As part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Kuo organized a free girls-only basketball clinic at the Crowther Teen Center for third- through fifth-grade girls. The clinic was offered at no cost to participants and provided an opportunity for young girls to learn basketball fundamentals while building confidence and teamwork skills. Members of the Glendora High School girls basketball team volunteered as coaches and mentors, helping to make the event a success.
Accepting the award, Kuo expressed her gratitude to the GCCC and reflected on the impact the clinic had on its participants. She shared that one of the most meaningful moments came when a young girl told her that after attending the clinic, she had decided to play basketball instead of soccer. For Kuo, the experience demonstrated the power of providing opportunities and positive role models for younger students.
Following the presentation, community representatives honored Kuo with Awards of Merit in recognition of her outstanding service and commitment to local youth.
Rev. Karen Davis spoke about the origins of the Crowther Youth Award, which was established in honor of former Glendora Police Officer Tim Crowther. She explained that the award recognizes young people who embody the principle of "service above self" through their contributions to the community and their willingness to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
Crowther's children, Dan Crowther and Dana Edwards, were present for the award presentation and joined community leaders in celebrating Kuo's achievement.
Through her Gold Award project, Kuo not only introduced young girls to the game of basketball but also created an experience that inspired participation, mentorship, and confidence, exemplifying the spirit of service that the Crowther Youth Award was created to recognize.
