Gary Clifford, Senior Executive Vice President of Government Affairs Retirement Announcement

After a distinguished career spanning more than 50 years across multiple industries, Gary Clifford, Senior Executive Vice President of Government Affairs, has announced his retirement from Athens Services, effective December 31, 2026.
The announcement follows a storied career marked by exceptional achievements and lasting impact in local and state government, education, law enforcement, and the waste and recycling industry. His extensive background in municipal leadership, public outreach, capital project management, negotiations, developing effective teams, and resolving complex managerial issues has made him a recognized figure throughout Southern California.
The road to Athens Services has been one filled with success, adventures and lifelong friendships. Starting off as a grocery store clerk, Gary soon found his way into law enforcement where he proudly served as a member of the Pasadena Police Department. From there he moved to Warner Media, a division of Time Warner, as a General Manager and Senior Vice President where he was responsible for the West Coast operations, including transitioning movies into digital media for worldwide distribution.
Gary then joined Athens Services in 2009 and now serves as Senior Executive Vice President, focusing on municipal and strategic relationships. He leads business strategy and new business development while overseeing compliance for existing contracts and ventures. His vision and public policy expertise have been invaluable throughout his tenure at Athens Services. Over the past 17 years, Gary has helped drive Athens Services’ growth and played an instrumental role in fostering a workplace culture energized by a shared commitment to our customers, communities, and the environment.
“Our family would like to thank Gary for his years of dedicated service to Athens and the communities we serve. Gary has played an integral role in the company and establishing the environmentally friendly programs our customers enjoy. Gary will always be part of our Athens’ family, we value your friendship, wish you well in retirement and will be deeply missed,” said Ron Arakelian III.
In addition to his professional role, Gary serves as a commissioner on the Selective Service Board, an appointment made by President George W. Bush. He currently leads the Glendora Unified School District as president and sits on several local boards focused on business, law enforcement, and public policy.
Deeply rooted in his community, Gary and his wife, Linda, have lived in Glendora for more than 40 years. He has served the community as a coach, volunteer, mentor, housing element chair, teacher, college professor at Azusa Pacific University and Los Angeles Pacific University, and mayor of Glendora. In 2022, The Glendora Chamber of Commerce named Gary the Glendora Citizen of the Year, recognizing his contributions to the well-being and economic development of the Glendora community.
“For me, it has always been about people, relationships, and service. It has been my honor to represent the Arakelian family, Athens Services, and the incredible men and women who make this company special,” noted Gary. “I am especially proud of the relationships we have built throughout Southern California and our shared commitment to our customers, our communities, and the environment. Athens Services truly is a family company, and we care for the people and communities we serve as family. After an amazing career and countless wonderful memories, it is finally time for me to go home to my wife, Linda, who has patiently waited for me all these years. I leave with a grateful heart and tremendous pride in the Athens family.”
Gary will be deeply missed. Please join us in wishing him a wonderful retirement filled with health and happiness. Bravo Gary!
